Government Targets Stronger Air Connectivity, Airport Expansion, and Tourism Growth. The Government of Bangladesh has proposed an allocation of BDT 1,884 crore for the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism in the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, aiming to transform the country into a leading regional hub for aviation and tourism. The proposed allocation marks a significant increase from the revised budget of BDT 1,300 crore in the previous fiscal year, although it remains lower than the original allocation of BDT 2,455 crore.
Focus on Modern Aviation Infrastructure
While presenting the national budget in Parliament, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the government's commitment to modernizing Bangladeshβs aviation sector through coordinated infrastructure development and digital transformation initiatives. Several major airport development projects are currently underway across the country. Expansion works are progressing at Jashore Airport and Saidpur Airport, while the much-anticipated Third Terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is expected to become fully operational soon. The government is also planning runway capacity enhancements at Sylhet Osmani International Airport and Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, alongside the completion of ongoing upgrades at Coxβs Bazar Airport. These projects are expected to significantly improve passenger handling capacity, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience.
Digital Transformation at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport
As part of its modernization efforts, the government is introducing several digital services at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). Expanded high-speed Wi-Fi coverage across larger passenger areas is among the key improvements designed to enhance traveler convenience. Authorities are also working to modernize passenger and cargo services, strengthen aviation safety systems, and introduce advanced digital technologies to streamline airport operations.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines to Acquire 14 New Boeing Aircraft
A major highlight of the budget announcement is the agreement between Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Boeing for the purchase of 14 new aircraft valued at approximately USD 3.7 billion (around BDT 45,408 crore). The acquisition is expected to strengthen Bimanβs international route network, increase cargo transportation capacity, and improve the airlineβs competitiveness in the global aviation market
Bangladesh Plans National Air Connectivity Network
The government has also unveiled plans to establish a comprehensive national air connectivity network, linking key regions of the country and supporting economic growth. Under this initiative, major airports in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet will be developed into integrated passenger and logistics hubs. Meanwhile, regional airports such as Rajshahi, Coxβs Bazar, Jashore, and Saidpur are expected to receive upgrades to facilitate international flight operations.
Tourism Sector Expected to Contribute 6β7% to GDP
Beyond aviation development, the government is preparing a comprehensive tourism investment strategy aimed at attracting more foreign tourists, encouraging private sector investment, and generating employment opportunities. According to the Finance Minister, these initiatives could help increase the tourism sectorβs contribution to Bangladeshβs Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6β7 percent in the coming years.
Outlook for Bangladeshβs Aviation and Tourism Industry
The proposed 2026-27 budget reflects Bangladeshβs long-term vision of becoming a modern aviation and tourism destination in South Asia. With ongoing airport expansions, fleet modernization, improved connectivity, and tourism investment initiatives, the country is positioning itself for stronger economic growth and increased international engagement.
